2014 marks the 30th anniversary of “akimbo alogo”, Kim Mitchell’s first full length solo recording post Max Webster, a record which introduced us to Kim’s big, bold and endemic guitar driven sounds in songs like “Go For Soda” and the anthemic “All We Are”. The recording, done at McClear Place studios in Toronto, was the first record financed by and released on Alert Music, which at the time was distributed by Polygram Records. The record went on to sell over 100,000 units (Platinum sales) and launchd Mitchell’s solo career, a career that remains vibrant and vital to today.

The original recording was made on a DAT recorder (state-of-the-art at the time). The 2xHD process used to transform the master into the 176kHz/24bits format, eliminates the digital jitter and bring this wonderful recording to its fullest value with an even better natural sound. A true audiophile gem.
Mastered from the original 96kHz, 24Bits files by Rene Laflamme and Andre Perry at Fidelio Technologies’ mastering lab, using the 2xHD process. A modified high-end dCS Vivaldi clock with silver and gold cables was used to create a very transparent sound.
ABOUT GIRL TALK
In March of 1990, the Holly Cole Trio, Holly Cole (Vocals), Aaron Davis (Piano) and David Piltch (Bass) determined that although they had recorded one small EP together ‘Christmas Blues’ it was time to record their first full length album. They wanted to preserve the quintessence of their live performance by keeping the parameters of recording of that first full record very close to the live environment that they had come to dominate in Toronto’s alternative Queen St west club scene. They enlisted Peter Moore who had just successfully produced the ground breaking ‘Trinity Sessions’ for the Cowboy Junkies. They found the Stephen Leacock Theatre in Keswick, Ontario and proceeded to record live off the stage in the empty hall, with the band strategically placed around a single Calrec Ambisonic Microphone. All the takes are full takes, no overdubbing. The record was highly successful, became a Gold selling release in Canada and a staple gold standard recording for showing off any piece of audio gear (speakers, amplifiers, microphones, etc.) at Audiophile conferences internationally and set Holly Cole up for a long and successful career.
‘The air of intimacy between artist and listener is so great that, if anything, the feeling of being present in the moment is greater here than on the 1996 live album It Happened One Night. On an album recorded ‘live in concert,’ the ambient noises that occur when a large number of people are gathered in one place can seem discordant or inappropriate when you’re listening to the CD in your car or your living room; the atmosphere can exclude rather than include you. Put on this disc, however, and you can imagine that Holly Cole is singing for you alone. It’s easy to focus on Cole’s emotionally compelling delivery, and at first you can be so mesmerized that you forget that the vocalist is one part of a trio. Listen more carefully, and it becomes apparent that the piano and bass accompaniments are deceptively simple — that they are, in fact, providing a counterpoint to the sung lyrics that is almost conversational. Suddenly, these simple arrangements feel quite complex. The most entertaining song on the album may well be Cole’s interpretation of the traditionally sunny and euphoric ‘Downtown.’ In her expert hands it moves from near cynicism to a guarded openness that makes this standard seem to have a range of meaning you may never have considered.’ (Maya Geryk)

The world’s best figure skaters will be back at the Langley Events Centre this holiday season for the 2013 Holiday Festival on Ice on December 6 at 7:00 PM (PST) in Langley, BC. This year’s show will feature Canadian jazz singer Holly Cole, adding to the already star studded line up of figure skaters which includes Elvis Stojko (two-time Olympic medalist), Kurt Browning (four-time World Champion) and Joannie Rochette (Olympic Bronze medalist), to name a few.
“We are extremely excited to bring back these skaters and add the new element of incorporating a live performance as a part of the event,” LEC Director of Business Development Jared Harman noted that Cole’s presence will give the evening a very different feel from what fans experienced last year.
Cole, who will be performing Christmas music while the skating stars perform on the ice, has been a mainstay in the Canadian music industry for the last two decades. She recently performed to sold out crowds for three straight nights at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. During that event, Cole was presented as the 15th winner of the Ella Fitzgerald Award which is given to a jazz singer of significant talent who has had a major impact and influence in the international scene. She joins the likes of Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Sade and Diana Krall as some of the past winners of the award. Cole and Krall are the only two Canadian Artists to ever receive this prestigious honour.
With such a star-studded lineup, this event has drawn the attention of CBC Television who will be at the Langley Events Centre to record the night’s festivities and will be airing the event during the Holiday Season.

2013 Ella Fitzgerald Award: Holly Cole
Holly Cole is the 15th recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald Award, established in 1999 for our 20th anniversary and conferred in recognition of the versatility, improvisational originality and quality of repertoire of a singer renowned on the international scene. A Nova Scotia native, this talented singer launched her career as a member of a number of Toronto groups. A passionate purveyor of jazz and pop, she is renowned for her interpretive talents―she has no equal when it comes to taking songs by artists as varied as Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Jacques Brel or even the Beatles and making them her own. Over the course of a prolific 30-year career, Holly Cole has cast her spell over the Festival audience many times. Back after her remarkable performance in Théâtre Maisonneuve two years ago, she presents her most recent album, Night. “I’m a customer service performer,” declares Kim Mitchell, the master of the electric guitar who has tantalized concert audiences since the mid-70s initially with Max Webster and then as a solo artist. Though many people didn’t understand Max, the few that did always got what they asked for: complex music with curiously surreal lyrics and a stage performance that balanced between manic and sublime. And as a solo artist the fans always hear those great, well-crafted rock songs that sweat strong melodies and are filled with potent hooks that leave one buzzing long after hearing them.
With a large body of work to draw from, giving the audience full customer service could mean playing for four hours to satisfy everyone in the audience, but Mitchell is frank in his appraisal of his rock-n-roll duty, playing the hits with a few surprises, “I give the audience what they want,” and even prepares for that extreme breed in attendance that expects the obscure, “I keep a few songs buried and ready to go for the uber-fan, but on the whole I play what they expect to hear.” And with so many hits and well known songs, that still makes for a great two hour show. And of course, keeping to the old adage of ‘leave them wanting more’ at the end of the night, wishing he played ‘that’ song, but maybe next time…
